One of the First Reviews from Jonas Brothers Show in Toronto

Here it is! One of the first reviews from www.thestar.com from tonight's Jonas Brothers concert in Toronto. Sounds like another amazing show:

Jonas Brothers deliver summer treat for screaming fans
August 31, 2009

Pop & Jazz Critic

Every audience wants to believe it's unique and the Jonas Brothers, like most touring acts, did their darnedest to make last night's Rogers Centre crowd feel special.

They delivered the typical "we love coming here" shtick and lauded the "familiar and new faces" greeting them since they were in town for the MuchMusic Video Awards in June. But there was an authentic air of novelty when Kevin Jonas declared "this is the biggest crowd we have performed for on this tour," which concludes in Ottawa today.

It's true: Toronto loves them some Jo Bros at least 56,000 strong. And for the naysayers been chattering about the group's decline in popularity - their concert film only grossed a third of Miley Cyrus's, and the new TV show got off to slow start - that's the second-most concert tickets sold here this year. It's just behind U2 (estimated 58,000-60,000 for each of their two Sept. dates) and ahead of Coldplay (45,000).

Of course many of those seats belonged to chaperones of the 7-to-12-year-old girls who comprised the bulk of attendees.

However, the New Jersey trio of Nick, 16; Joe, 20 and Kevin, 21, dressed in shades of black and grey, put on a show with much more musical depth and maturity that fan base would augur.

There were a few neat party tricks - massive rotating in-the-round stage with a trampoline in the middle and runaways out into floor seats, a white piano that rose out of the floor, a smaller hydraulics-pumped stage - but no fancy choreography, multiple costume changes or fireworks.

Heralded by a tape of Queen's "We Will Rock You," the fellas rose up through the middle of the stage and launched the tasteful, music-focused 100-minute set with "Paranoid" from current disc Lines, Vines & Trying Times, followed by "That's the Way We Roll" and "Poison Ivy."

Not that you could actually hear the band, given the feverish fans who were either screaming or singing as loud as they could.

Those rock-star parents who shelled out $15.50-$95.50 for an end-of-summer treat should also have been entertained by the purity ring-wearing sibs.

For one thing, the ensemble's live sound is more rock 'n' roll than kiddie pop, plumped by a driving 10-piece band, including four horns and two violinists. Then, playing solo piano on "Black Keys," Kevin spun a moving tale about being diagnosed as diabetic four years ago and asking the doctor "Am I going to die?" The upshot of this was not to be defeated by challenges, which may come in handy as a teaching tool. And how about that cover of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline?"

Unexpected treats included the appearance by singer Demi Lovato for "This Is Me," and a bouncing version of the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling." Nick, the crowd favourite, also played drums and guitar. Kevin concentrated on guitar and did most of the speaking, while somersaulting, microphone-jumping Joe was the most exuberant.

The Jonas Brothers are hard workers, churning out four albums in the past four years, with a massive, young following that's theirs to squander.

Miley Cyrus Talks About Her BFF's on Her New DVD

Are Miley and Demi really friends? Apparently so! Miley talks about friendship and more in her exclusive interview on the new Hannah Montana The Movie DVD. Here's what the star had to say:

Hi Miley! What makes a good friend?
Friendship is all about trust. If you can trust someone completely, then that is a good friend. That’s someone you should cherish.

And what makes a best friend?
A best friend is when the friendship goes to the next level – it’s like when you feel more like family with someone rather than just friends. Emily Osment and me have that kind of relationship.

Do you consider Emily part of your family?
We’re like sisters and she is my best friend. We will fight like sisters and we drive each other absolutely crazy half the time, but that’s the beauty of it all. She’s one of the few people I feel completely comfortable with and that’s important for a friendship. That means a lot to me because my family means a lot to me.

You mention in your biography that your relationship with Emily was a little shaky when you first started on Hannah Montana… Can you tell us a bit about it?
Well, it’s all written in the book, but it’s true. We didn’t see eye to eye on a few things when I started work on the show.

How did you get over it?
We just grew together as we continued to work together. Like I said earlier, I think we’re more like sisters than friends now. Now, we can be completely honest with each other. We can fight and we can be silly – but we will always love each other.

Can you be moody with each other too?
Definitely! We can argue and be moody with each other, but we know everything will be OK. We’ll get over it because we love each other.

Have you ever been let down badly by a friend?
Oh, sure. Things like that happen to everyone, but I’ve learned to be mature about it and just let it go.

Do you make a big deal out of it if someone lets you down badly?
No. I feel like it’s immature to do that. What’s the point? If the person isn’t meant to be a friend, then just let it go. You’ll know inside if there’s a friendship there to save, but sometimes there isn’t. If you’re really over it – and they’ve hurt you really badly – then there’s no reason to care anymore. Be mature about the situation and let it go.

Do you find it easy to tell if a friend is being genuine or not?
I think it’s harder to find people that are real in Hollywood. There’s this amazing quote by Andy Warhol where he talks about the way that everything is fake and plastic in Hollywood. I think it’s an awesome quote – and it’s pretty true.

Is Hollywood a fake place to live then?
When you think about it, this city can be very plastic. You don’t know what’s real or fake because almost everyone has a motive to be here. Almost everyone wants something.

Do you have many people you can trust in Hollywood?
It’s hard, but it’s getting better because I’m meeting more people I can trust all the time. The good thing is that I have people around me – like Emily – who I know I can depend upon and love unconditionally.

So what makes you smile when you’re feeling down?
A lot of things bring a smile to my face. Music, movies, friends, family… Everything. I’m very lucky. I wouldn’t change a thing for the world.

Here's what Miley had to say about her friends:
EMILY OSMENT
I’m very close to Emily. She’s really fun and she’s beautiful both inside and out. Emily is a really sweet, sweet person and she takes care of me big time. I take care of her too. We’re like sisters. We get along like sisters – and we fight like sisters!

VANESSA HUDGENS
Vanessa is great. I think she’s really cool and I’m so excited that she got to work on her first movie away from High School Musical at last. It’s going to be really cool for her. I can’t wait to see how she does this year.

MANDY JIROUX
Mandy is my best friend. She is actually my dancer, so she goes on tour with me – and she’s great. When I toured the States last year, it was really cool to have her with me 24/7. I’d go and stay on her bus every once in a while to escape.

DEMI LOVATO
I’m very close to Demi Lovato. We’re always Twittering each other, but we don’t get to hang out too often because we’re always working. Whenever I have free time, I love to spend it with Demi. We’ve grown really close.

Nick Jonas, President?

Nick Jonas was in Washington this week to help raise awareness for type1 diabetes, a disease he was diagnosed with in 2005. Monday, he told the National Press Club audience that he's "always had this dream of becoming president one day."

In an interview with Reuters, Nick admitted that his presidential dreams were not a joke. “As much as I joke about it and kind of say it to get a laugh, it is somewhat serious. I don’t know if it will happen.” he said. He continued to to talk about his hopes to study English and Political Science if he decides to go to college in the future.

Nick is one of the youngest people to ever attend a National Press Club meeting, yet audiences embraced his efforts as ambassador for children's diabetes. "So many fans with diabetes from all over the world share their stories and thank me for being an inspiration to them," said Nick. "It's important for them to know that they motivate and inspire me as well. I'm lucky to have a great support system in my family as well as the tools I need to manage my diabetes properly. By speaking publicly about my experience I hope to increase diabetes awareness, encourage diabetes education and help fundraising for research and other programs for kids with diabetes. The more you report about diabetes, the more people will know..."

Nick also had the amazing opportunity to meet President Obama earlier this year to speak about his hopes for diabetes awareness. Perhaps that's where he got his inspiration to someday become president. Vote for Jonas!

The Jonas Brothers Make a Wish Come True

Thanks to Vector Marketing Canada, and The Jonas Brothers, one big fan had his dreams come true. After donating to The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, a 4 year-old name Naythaniel got his wish to meet his favorite band, The Jonas Brothers. Naythaniel was diagnosed at 2 years-old with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, and during his many hospital visits, Naythaniel always insisted on watching his favorite movie, 'Camp Rock'. The Jonas Brothers became an instant favorite of Naythaniel's, with their music helping him through his difficult treatments.

When he was granted a wish through the Children's Wish Foundation, Naythaniel immediately choose to meet the The Jonas Brothers and to seem them perform in Edmonton.

In July, Naythaniel got his wish. He was able to watch the entire show and meet Nick, Joe, and Kevin Jonas backstage. "After the concert, Naythaniel couldn't stop talking about the Jonas Brothers and singing their songs," said his Mom. "This will be a memory neither of us will ever forget."

Jonas Brothers @ Lexington

The Jonas Brothers show last night at Rupp Arena, in Lexington Kentucky, brought out 18,500 fans, and was followed by great reviews. Here is one of the first from kentucky.com:

Review: Jonas Brothers rock Rupp Arena

Concert impressive, a bit too scripted

By Rich Copley rcopley@herald-leader.com

Give the people what they want is a time-honored show business slogan, and it certainly held true as the Jonas Brothers played to 18,500 screaming, screeching, squealing fans in Rupp Arena Sunday night.

The teen heartthrobs who have benefited tremendously from the patronage of Disney, brought a tightly scripted production worthy of the Magic Kingdom to town with smoke, mirrors, lifts, lasers and — on the lower-tech end — a trampoline.

It is a testament to the quickly evolving nature of teen pop culture that the Jonas Brothers were in Lexington less than two years ago as the fledgling openers for then pop princess Miley Cyrus, who was touring as herself and her Disney Channel alter ego, Hannah Montana. Now they are back on their second headlining tourwith an ambitious set-up highlighted by a stage that reportedly ran 144 feet across the Rupp Arena floor.

It's a demanding playground that would take some youthful stamina to cover. That's something the JoBros have on their side. They also have instrumental and songwriting chops, and brought along a crack 10-piece band to help them play. Highlights of the evening were when that band spread the stage pumping out hits like Play My Music, Much Better and a rollicking mom-and-dad sing along of Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline. There were also spotlights like Nick Jonas playing solo piano on Black Keys and talking about his battle with Type A diabetes.

It was a thoroughly professional, excruciatingly choreographed show for a band that was just establishing itself a few years ago.

Another testament to how much things have changed is that the first opening act, Honor Society, is the first group signed to the Jonas Brothers' own label. Honor Society is a quartet of skilled musicians who made the most of their opportunity to appear on the huge stage, attacking it with boundless energy. All they need is a few strong songs and a sustained popular taste for boy bands, and they could be headlining in a few years.

South Korean imports The Wonder Girls could have accomplished a lot more doing another song instead of teaching the audience the dance to their first single, Nobody But You.

The undisputed champion of the undercard, though, was Jordin Sparks, who reminded us why she was an American Idol champ by being so much more impressive than she ever was on the show. She worked all ends of the Jonas' long stage, drawing the crowd into sublime sing-alongs of Tattoo and Air. Sparks was backed by a fun, edgy band that gave the star a lot to work with.

Interestingly, she saved her big, current hit for the Jonas' set in a clever pairing with Jonas' song about tempestuous love, World War III. That pairing gave the end of the show another shot of energy.

What JoBros' set lacked was much room for spontaneity. They have been playing essentially the same set all summer. And the glossy production really didn't seem to allow for much deviation from the script.

The band's core audience certainly doesn't seem to care. The JoBros came, they rocked, and gave the fans memories that will last for decades. But in those ensuing decades, many of those fans will come to appreciate shows that aren't so scripted that not only give you what you want, but what you didn't know you wanted.
